Beginning Writing II (grades 7-10)

Course: This is a 14 week course that will cover all aspects of writing a research paper. Students will be required to submit writing assignments using proper grammar, sentence structure, and paragraphs. We will cover topics such as variety in word choices, proper use of simple and complex sentences, organization, content structure, and a variety of other related subject matter. The course is geared towards students in 7th-10th grade who have not previously been exposed to longer writing assignments but have had language and grammar focused courses. My goal for the students is that they will be able to properly write and submit a research paper and to effectively communicate through the written word.
Time: Mondays 1:15 - 2:30 pm beginning January 11 ending by May 3. Holidays observed: Jan. 18, Feb. 15, Mar. 15
Location: Shades Mountain Independent Church conference room B (2281 Old Tyler Road, Hoover 35226)
Fees: $150.00 per student. A $50 non-refundable down payment is due with registration form and balance is due the first day of class.
Instructor: Carol Wilkins B.S. in Secondary Education M. A. in Speech Communications from Pensacola Christian College. Former Assoc. professor at Pensacola Christian College, Florida Gulf Coast University, teacher at a Christian high school. She was a freelance author and editor for Associated Content. She is currently employed by Shades Mountain Independent Church as a pastoral administrative assistant.

Course: This is a 14 week course that will explore the basic modes of writing, descriptive, creative, expository, narrative and persuasive, through writing projects and reading. Students will be required to submit writing assignments using proper grammar, sentence structure, and paragraphs as appropriate. We will cover topics such as variety in word choices, proper use of simple and complex sentences, organization, content structure, and a variety of other related subject matter. This course is supplemental and designed to be only the writing portion of a middle school or high school general English course. Students will be expected to be studying literature, vocabulary and additional grammar as part of their home studies. Ninth and Tenth graders will be evaluated on a high school level and the content will represent a partial credit of a General English 9 or 10.
Time: Two class offerings, Mon or Tuesday 1:00-2:15 beginning Aug 17 and 18th and ending November 30 and Dec 1. Class will not meet on: Sept. 7-8 or October 12-13

Fees: $150.00 ($50.00 registration fee, balance due the first day of class) Must have 3 students for a class to be held.
