Comprehensive American History with Literature 11th-12th grade Course. (see note regarding younger students)
Age of Exploration – mid 1900s. Lecture, group work, individual reading outside of class, work-study sheets, mapping exercises and a research project second semester. Using various methods of teaching including interactive discussion, samples of American Literature, projects, movie nights etc., this course will cover American History through 20th century. Students can expect an extra 3-4 additional hours of work per week to be completed on their own in addition to the 4 hours of class time. ( Note: 9th and 10th grade students must be in the 90% or higher on the verbal portion: total reading, reading comprehension and Language Arts, of their most recent standardized test and have a teacher evaluation). This course will be using and reinforcing higher level thinking skills on Bloom’s taxonomy usually not achieved until the junior or senior year (analysis, synthesis and evaluation). Tests will be short answer essay and require extensive note taking in class. The history portion of this course is taught in general American History over two years at Shades Mountain Christian School. Although the content has been slightly condensed to complete it in one academic year, parents of younger high school students need to understand this is a challenging college prep “honors” level course.This course is worth the content of 1.5 high school credits which can be given in history or 1 for history and ½ for the literature portion of a General English course (not American Literature by itself).
